NCR - College Football Network Bias

As I watched the 2 big games today and tonight I had to think to myself, I have not seen media bias
like this since the Presidential election. Not only did CBS practically give the Hiesman to Tebow, but they congratulated the team on going to the National Championship and concluded that midway thru the 4th quarter.

Now I realize that the BCS needs to sell tickets and after all the Championship game is in Miami, but cant they at least be a little impartial to some of the other teams. I also know the media loves a good story and who didn’t want to report on Tebow nearly in tears after the Ole Miss loss making a promise to lead his team back to victory.

Let me start by saying that I have been telling everyone this would happen weeks ago and I knew that some teams were going to get shafted so its not like I am surprised.

It is my opinion that when the BCS rankings come out tomorrow they will show
1) Oklahoma
2) Florida
3) Texas
4) USC
5) Alabama

But lets set all this bias aside (From my standpoint too) for a minute and look at the real numbers.

Here is the body of work for all the teams I just mentioned above.

When just looking at the wins and the current BCS Rankings of opponents

Oklahoma Wins
Cincinatti - 13
TCU - 11
Texas Tech - 7
Oklahoma State - 14
Mizzou - 20

Florida Wins
Georgia - 16
Florida State - 24
Alabama - 5

Texas Wins
Oklahoma - 1
Oklahoma State - 14
Mizzou - 20

USC Wins
Ohio State - 10
Oregon - 19

Alabama Wins
Georgia - 16

So how do we tell who has the most quality wins? I suggest giving points based on rankings. A win over a #1 teams earns you 25 and a win over a #25 team gets you 1 point

Using this point system we come up with the following

Oklahoma - 60 Points
Texas - 40 Points
Florida - 30 Points
USC - 21 Points
Alabama - 9 Points

Now that does not even take into consideration the quality of loss of each team

Lets say that if you lose to a top 5 team you deduct 5 points, a top 25 team you lose 10 Points and an unranked team you lose 15 points.

Oklahoma lost to #3 Texas (-5)
Texas - Lost to #7 Texas tech (-10)
Florida - Lost to UNRANKED Ole Miss (-15)
USC - 21 Points Lost to UNRANKED Oregon State (-15)
Alabama - Lost to #2 Florida (-5)

That leave us with the following Rankings

Oklahoma - 55 Points
Texas - 30 Points
Florida - 15 Points
USC - 7 Points
Alabama - 5 Points

Looks like whether you include losses or not Oklahoma is by far the best team in NCAA Football followed by Texas, Florida USC and Alabama.

The numbers dont lie, but in the BCS, the media bias counts.

I just thought everyone would like to see the numbers on what should really count in a championship game which is wins and losses and not these rediculous "Style Points"

Just my opinion,
Doug
