NCR: Reno Souvenir Plates

Gooood Mornin! Since I received some favorable posts to the Las Vegas souvenir plate I showed on Sunday, I thought I'd show a couple of plates from Reno today. If you missed it, or want to take another look, here's the link: http://www.thechipboard.com/cgi-bin/bbs521/webbbs_config.pl/read/770088
I forgot to mention that it's a small (Salad) plate that measures 7 3/8" in diameter.

Both were made by HOMER LAUGHLIN located in East Liverpool, Ohio, and these are my favorite type of plates. The first plate that I bought had a similar kind of of transfer art which first appeared in the mid 1950s. Later in the decade, American importers took the transfer designs to Japan and had the Japanese manufacturers put them on their blanks which created a huge lawsuit and the demise of American made souvenir plates.

Anyway, Homer Laughlin plates are very popular, and they're easy to date. They have a code on the back along with their makers' mark. The first letter indicates the month: "A" for January, and so on up to "L" for December. Then there's a 2 digit year number, and in this case both plates were made in (19)54. And last is a letter/number code that refers to the factory building that made the plate.

Feel free to contact me by email if you see something you'd like to purchase.

This first plate is a 9 3/8" Cavalier style plate with a shallow dish, and it's only 5/8" high. There's some tears in the tansfer down at the bottom (under the bridge), but otherwise there's no wear.

This is also a 9 3/8" plate from their Sloan series or style; it has a deeper dish, and it's 1" high at the edge of the rim. The rim color is a darker green with a different 22 K gold "lace" pattern (I'm sorry it's so hard to see because it's actually very attractive). There's no wear. I really enjoy this plate! I guess it's the street scene with the cars that get my attention.
