I sometimes have the same problem. I recently told the counter man to try to put the envelope thru the cardboard letter slot to see if it was to thick. He did not even know that it existed until another worker showed it to him. On the other side I recently received a first class letter that was post marked 10 weeks earlier. The sender & I went round & round on this thinking it was lost.
