Gambling and income tax time

A note of interest for those who sometimes play in the promotional events many casinos offer. I got some cash in a sweepstakes at Venetian last year, and was surprised to get a Federal 1099-MISC tax report from them this week. First time that has happened to me. I would assume this could also happen with tournaments, drawngs, and such. May have been because the amount was over $1,200 but there was no explanation.

Of course you probably know you get W-2G reports when you win at a high-odds game. You sign, and are presented the form on the spot if the win is $1,200 or more.
