The good news is that the American Society of Safety Engineers annual conference is in Vegas this year. The week before the convention... can anyone say WOOOOOO HOOOOO! I'll be there for two full weeks, half at the company expense and the other half is mine... and partially comp. I am working on a new personal design for the convention... and looking forward to it! I'll have a few days in LV before the convention and not working, so I will be contacting somebody to line up volunteer work for this year.
Other than that... I am taking part in a fund raiser up here. It's for the Stollery Children's Hospital Pediatric Oncology and the Make-a-Wish Foundation in Edmonton. The Stollery is one of, if not the best, children's hospital in Canada. The Oncology group takes care of the kids with cancer, and the Make-a-Wish foundation gives terminally ill kids a chance to experience something they would never otherwise get to. So what's the catch... I am in the St. Valentine's Day Massacure. So what is that?
The Massacure was launched in 2003, when a little girl Kali (all of 4) lost her locks for the third time in her 3 year treatment, her Dad, Gord set out to inspire co-workers at Canada Post to shave. In 2003, 48 people kicked off the first Massacre, $37,000.00 was raised. It's now up to 400+ participants and has raised over $1 million dollars. So why shave? To experience and appreciate the emotions tied to sudden hair loss (realizing of course, that we have the choice, cancer patients don’t). Cancer cannot possibly be understood though a head shave, it’s just a tiny peek at one minor aspect of it’s effects. This event is held to honor these little patients.
Oh... and the other catch.... to raise the awareness of the fund raising campaign, volunteers are encouraged to dye their hair pink. Yup. PINK. It's Kali's favorite color and one that gets lots of attention. Trust me. I said that if my co-wokers committed to $1000, I would dye it pink. Guess what... they did it.
So here's the deal... for every club member that donates $10 or more to the cause, I will send you one of my personal chips. Many of you already have them, but they're for a good cause and as Doug says, make great traders. In Canada, donations over $25 get a tax receipt, but I am not sure how that would work for you American members. To make a donation, all you need to do is go to my Massacure page, click on the donate button and follow the directions. To receive the personal chip, all I ask is that you add you membership number in the message and send me an email with your address.
