WOW, Whadda' question....

Excellent question! (You kinda’ stumped me!)

The most valuable US Note in Denomination was the $100,000.00 bill. Those were never released to the public and were used only for Bank-to-Bank transactions. The largest denomination ever released to the public was the $10,000.00. All notes larger than the $100.00 have been recalled and are no longer in use but any that are still out there will always retain their face value for redemption. You may ask why have the large notes been recalled when the buying power has constantly dropped since the days of the “G” notes. Well, that is because of CREDIT. The average American only pays cash for average purchases of $42.00 and under, otherwise he uses credit, debit, or a check.

As far as the most valuable note for a collector I don’t know what it would be because I know there are a number of issues that there are only a few known to exist. These notes have a ‘priceless’ book value because it will all depend on what they will fetch if sold, and since none have sold in recent history (held by the owners) no value can be set. I have seen notes with book values in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. It depends on the condition, number still believed to be in public hands (rarity), and lust (amount another buyer is driven to have it) just to name a few. Gold Certificates and National notes carry hefty price tags. Currency from the Republic of Texas is extremely valuable, so there is not just one but several “top value” currencies out there. I am sure there is a “Most Ever Paid For Note” out there but I do not know what it is or who owns it and that is subject to change the next time someone with really deep pockets have to have the last ‘one of those’ notes. Maybe Andy Hughes will post his old $5 note for you .... It's worth a King's Ransom.

The least valuable US Banknote as far as denomination is the (fractional) 5¢ note (1863). The least valuable to collectors is a crumpled up current $1 note, it’s worth a dollar that’s all no more no less.

As far as Confederate currency goes, I am not knowledgeable enough to tell you much. Some ARE very valuable, and many are counterfeits made long after the Confederacy fell.

That’s the best I can come up with…..
