Larry, I play poker weekly with 5-8 people and a 500-chip set works perfectly. A 300-chip set would be fine for like 4-5 people.

If you have a Dick's Sporting Goods store near you, today is the last day of their sale and you can get a 500-chip set for $29.98 (formerly $129.99). That's a pretty good deal for a standard set of chips. In comparison, the cheapest set on overstock.com right now is only 300 chips and it is $10 more.
