Re: NCR-Moulin Rouge / Westside

I wondered if someone would question that... shoulda' known it would be you! vbg

I have to admit that I wondered about that myself...

exhibit a: a close up of the mural on the left side of the stage. I've seen other pictures of the Moulin Rouge...the murals look the same.

exhibit b: a close up of the mural on the right side of the stage.

exhibit c: a photo from Life Magazine, June 20, 1955, also more white than black.
Captioned: Blackjack Tables at Moulin Rouge, first big club in Las Vegas to admit both Negroes and whites, were jammed opening night with well-dressed gamblers.

And the fact that there were any blacks in these pictures is the best evidence that they were from the Moulin Rouge.

Until 1960, blacks were not allowed to gamble (or eat or stay) at any of the other resorts. In 1960 there was a meeting between civil rights leaders and public officials that ended the segregation.

I'm convinced that the picture IS from the Moulin Rouge. I've wondered if they put the whites 'front and center' to encourage more white patronage. You know, wanted to avoid getting mixed up with someplace like....uh, well, The Ultra New Town Tavern, for example?? grin
