I use one of the Epson Perfection series. I dont know the specific model number and I am sure that model is no longer available but its basically a pretty standard Epson scanner that you will find in your big-box store. The scans I make are done by placing the chip on the scanner bed alone.

I use Photoshop Elements to scan the photos as it will do the Twain transfer by calling the Epson software. That's not important for a clear scan, only for being able to manipulate the scan afterwards as it will bring in the scan as raw data. If you save the image first then you lose some of the clarity with the original scan compression.

This one is a little more expensive but its probably a good one
