Tropicana, Laughlin $1 error chip...

This scan was passed to me by a ChipTalk.net member (whom I know). He advised that he received it as just one of the chips in a stack of twenty, in a rack of 100. In case the scan is too small, the chip on the right is a regular (non-error) chip, with a GPI (Paul-Son) hat and cane mold.

The error chip is on the left and it appears to have not gone through the final step of manufacture. The inlays (both sides) are barely in-place (held by a spot of glue) and there is no cross-hatching or impressions of the hat and cane mold. In effect, the chip is a plain mold chip, but it simply seems to have escaped the final heat and compression stage of manufacture. I advised the owner to place the chip into an air-tite, to improve the chances of the inlays staying in-place, and to also make sure they don't get lost.

I wish it was mine, but the fact that he is curious about value may be a clue. I told him that I would estimate value to be between $60 and $120. This is because I've not seen this type of error before. The nature of the error may reflect a lone example, but it is possible that there are more.

Opinions please... Any other estimates of value?

Thanks for looking.
