I am also on ATT, but millions aren't and plenty of them probably think they can get the phone with their current carrier. I think it's pretty silly to only allow certain phones to certain providers. The phone and phone service should be totally unrelated, for example you first pick your phone, then pick which carrier you would like. What happens if you are unhappy with your carrier but you love your phone, you are stuck unless you accept a phone you don't like so much.
As with most technology, the first wave of people who get it the minute it comes out pay the most for it, then a year later anyone can buy it at a fraction of the cost and with some upgrades...
I bought my Sega Dreamcast for $100 with 3 games, others paid several hundred with no games. I did the same thing with XBOX 1 and sure enough, in another year or so, I'll probably end up getting an XBOX 360 for $100 with some extras, and it will be just as new and exciting for me as those who got it the day it came out, but I didn't have to waste tons of money on markup! Think of the money saved over a lifetime of doing this on most of what you buy. That way I can buy and experience much more than someone who mkaes the same as me but wants everything when it first comes out. Just don't apply this strategy when buying eggs!
Digital cameras and computers are good examples. The first ones were real expensive and such small storage it was funny. Now 2gb camera memory cards are $20-$30 and I saw a terabyte external hard drve for personal computers advertised in a store flyer for the first time. Pretty soon 2gb memory cards will be obsolete, and 100gig hard drivers will be embaressing because right on schedule each week we will figure out how to put 1 more gig on a mem chip, then 1 more... The longer you wait out to upgrade your technology, the better value you get for your money and the more of an upgrade you actually get. Why don't 'they' just make all computers with 100terabytes of storage so we don't have to buy new ones each month with just a breadcrumb more storage upgrade on each one? Because that is the best way to maximize profits...Dammit, you got me started and now I've just lost sight of the topic.
