My goddaughter had a birthday party to go to, so my buddy Kevin took his younger daughters to a local checkers tournament. He presumed (or at least I did) that it was for kids-only costing $3 to enter. But when he arrived he found that except for his daughters, all the contestents were elderly gentleman (he lives in an area that is heavy in Amish and they made up most of the crowd) some who traveled from Ohio and Southern Indiana.
His daughters came in last and next to last (the younger beat the older), but they had a great time, were bought Ice Cream Cones, and got lots of attention and help from all the old guys. They were the darlings of the tournament, had lunch at a mexican restaurant and thought their daddy was just the greatest thing, instead of being mad that they didn't get to go to the birthday party.
Kevin will never forget yesterday, and while the girls (neither older than 5) may not remember the day when they are crazed teenagers, will sleep well knowing their daddy loves them.
My oldest goddaughter graduates high school on Tuesday, and matriculates at Purdue in the fall. Talk about cool, it is great being a godfather is great even if you don't get to run the numbers, docks, unions, hookers, or gambling. I don't even get to have people rubbed out.
