The saddest thing I ever did see...

I played poker tonight at one of my husband's co-worker's house; I'll share the actual poker story over at HPT or CT, but this sad tale is of more interest to collectors. Tonight, I had the sorry misfortune to set my eyes upon a virtual chip graveyard.

This co-worker (a sweet man, despite being a chip murderer) had a decent gaming area in his basement; this was your typical casual poker player's poker room, with dice chips and table toppers, but that's ok, because not everyone is a die-hard poker degenerate like some of us. But even knowing that didn't prepare me for the carnage that I saw when my husband called me over to the co-worker's self-built bar to "come see the cool stuff over here, honey".

The bar itself was beautifully made; hubby says it was made with a very high grade of birch, and you could see the care that went into building it. The top of the bar appeared to have some sort of see-through sealant, encasing Michigan-area knickknacks here and there. You see where I'm going with this, right? Yep: this bar was the ultimate slab job.

I truly wanted to weep when I saw chip after pristine chip, and even some mint Michigan and Vegas tokens, forever buried, never to be touched again. Many of these chips and tokens have been on my wanted list ever since I discovered Greg's chipguide. Lac Vieux Desert Casino. Leelanau Sands. A Soaring Eagle 50-center. A Langworthy from the now-closed Saginaw Chips. Even an old Caesars Vegas chip. The closest I could come to these chips was taking pictures with my husband's phone cam. Though I don't think I can bear looking at them again.

If he had had a Casino Windsor rose encased in that bar top, I would've done some serious damage.
