Just a couple of comments to add to Larry's response. The Treasure Bay is also open - small but a major expansion is well under way. Beau Rivage and IP have been completely renovated, nicer and busier than before. Biloxi Grand is operating in their hotel across US 90. Harrah's owns it and many additional acres on the beach including the old Casino Magic. They have plans for a big bucks(one billion dollar)resort. Boomtown, Isle of Capri and Hollywood(old BSL Casino Magic)are essentially the same. Island View just opened a large expansion which features an Emeril Lagasse restaurant. The Silver Slipper is all brand new but it is a 40 minute drive west of Gulfport.
Pearl River Resort 200 miles north near Philadelphia is worth a look. Two hotels, two casinos, great golf course and a water park.
I don't think Katrina did any catastrophic damage as far east as Gulf Shores but I have no info on the Dauphin Island ferry.
