Thanks for posting this today Wes, good idea. The article on the Landmark was pretty good until the bilge backed up concerning Howard Hughes. It was a pretty significant part of the Howard Hughes/Las Vegas story but I'll stick with Robert Maheu's Next To Hughes for facts rather than the Howard Hughes cr*p that LVA put up today.

Significant in a number of ways. The machinations of Hughes to obstruct, best, and beat out Kerkorian and his International were pretty remarkable... and a damn sight more interesting than QoD's nose poking up cocktail servers' skirts. Interesting because it also was the beginning of the end of the Hughes/Maheu combo and an acceleration of Hughes' slide into the abyss of ill health. Too bad LVA missed the part where Maheu hired Moe Dalitz for a business analysis of the Landmark, what Dalitz found to be it's underlying business flaw and his estimation that the Landmark would lose 5.5 million dollars the first year of operation under Hughes. In real life (not LVA real life), it lost $5.7 million the first year. These are the numbers that I believe.

Too bad you missed the actual story on Hughes and the Landmark at LVA today. Geez, open a window...
