"The idea here is that the drum and cartridges are controlled by a chip which tracks the number of pages printed. It does not track the actual amount of toner (powdered ink) left in the cartridge. Nor does it track the actual life left in the image drum. At best, this results in a conservative estimate of printouts left.

Hewlett-Packard's current strategy is that it is better to have the cartridge tell the user it must be replaced before the actual ink runs out. Unfortunately, the decision to stop using the cartridge is left up to HP's chip and not to the actual user of the printer. So even though you still have some life left in your $175 imaging drum...
