It should have read 1970's.

Sorry. That's what the history says on their web site.

It should also be noted that in portions of rural North Central and Northwest Wisconsin, some tribes jumped the gun on gaming - they didn't particularly feel constrained by the absence of a gaming pact. With the state's history of not always honoring it's treaties I'm not too surprised.

There was a lot of illegal gambling going on in the smaller towns, and I grew up with my parents telling me how "evil" the town of Hurley was. That came from a dad who weekly played the NFL football sheets run by the local mob.

Also, Milwaukee was known for it's red light district located directly across the street from City Hall in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Not everyone was a hard-working farmer or cheese maker - and I imagine even a good proportion of hard-working farmers and cheese makers indulged from time to time.
