I use something like that in woodturning. It's called a center finder. Place it over the end of a piece of stock, wether it's round, hex, or square, and draw the line. Rotate it 90 deg. and draw another line. The center of the stock is were the lines intersect. You may also have to draw a number of lines to find the center. It is very important when mounting the wood stock on a lathe.
