"metal inlay" types
In Response To: FRIDAY "OF THE DAY IS.... ()

Thought I'd show what I consider to be the different types of metal inlay chips.

The three on the top row are the types usually recognized:

  • Mapes foil inlay

  • Landmark Paul-son metal inlay

  • Silver Slipper coin inlay

There are actually two sub-types of the BudJones coin inlays, early ones with black coating over the bottom of the design, and later ones with no coating. Scanned below is one of the "black letter" variety. BudJones coin inlays were also produced with both flush and incuse designs on the plastic rims.

The three on the bottom are properly called "plastic molded slug core" (PMSC to use Howdy's abbreviation). These heavy chips may initially appear to be metal inlays on a plastic chip, but in reality, the diecast metal core is produced first and the plastic molded around it; not not a true inlay. The Reno Ramada is a brass core and the Top of the Vine is a bi-metal core, the last type of PMSC chip to be produced before they went the way of the dodo.
