Cleaning brass cic's

The chip below is a coin in center with a brass center. As you can see, it has a fair amount of tarnish. Is it possible for the tarnish to damage the face of the coin center (for example pitting, it feels a bit bumpy)? If so, should I try to polish it? If I should polish it, any suggestions for a good polisher? Or, should I just leave it alone?

I appreciate any input. Thanks.
