Re: Starting to Rethink Slabbing

I've read some but not all of the slabing post. At first I said I've ben down this road road before (mid 1990's) when the slabing of sport cards came along. While I owned a few slabed cards over the years,( a few that come to mind are my 52 mantle, both 56 checklists, a 58 maris, and a small hanfull of others. Very minimal to the total number of cards involved in the 48 to 55 bowman and 51 to 79 topps sets. Like cards my thoughts on chips are about the same. Slabing any chip that does not not have a decent value ( decent value can only be described by the owner of the product)(to me it might be $100.00, to you it might be $2000.00) is unneeded. I'm not so sure that the condition is all that important. In the sports cards feild they are giving a grade of 1 to 10. Very subjective. I have seen dealers break out 100 cards that are graded a 7 and resubmit thghem hoping to get a 8 or a 9. The differance between a 7 and an 8 is BIG $. 8 to a 9 crazy. It can turn a $400 card into a $4000 card. The slabing that I would have NO problem with is a company That had th ABILITY to determine if a chip or other item was real, fake, altered, repaired. I think this is very important. They don't ned to grade them. In the late 90's I was in the process of trying to purchase one of the big 4 to the T-206 setFort WSHINGTON, at a large east coast show, . Both the owner and myself were not 100% sure that the card had not been tampered with. WE agreed that I would take it over to SGC ( the leader in grading pre 1940's cards in my opinion.) 3 hours later they gve us a written report that stated in thgeir opinion the card was an original, but had been altered to look like the mgie error card. With that in mind if there was a quailified company who could tell you your chip was legit, I think that could hold some value to the hobby. THey cant set a value, as someone stated what happens when someone finds a boox of r-9 chips. Slabing low end chips make no sense at all. If I was buying a big $ chip, and they was a qualified servive available I would consider having them take a look at it before I droped a lot of $. Again, I also am not looking to stir up a big mess with this post, just telling what I 've seen over the 12 years or so.

Plus it's hard to yell at me right now, as Im the one with scrambled pumkin
