While 2003 Main event champion Chris Moneymaker and 2004 champion Greg Raymer did indeed both win their seats on Pokerstars, 2005 winner Joe Hachem did not, Joe came to the WSOP and bought in with $10k of his own cash. It was only after his win that he was signed up by Pokerstars having played mainly on Ladbrokespoker before that.
