More things to do with a rented car
In Response To: GO TO... ()

If you are like me, I spend nights in the casinos and days out on the roads.

What they said. Driving tour of Red Rock canon, but if you have to choose, make Hoover Dam, and go early in the morning, first tour if possible. It's amazing. I think I've been 3 or 4 times and still enjoy the tour.

More things.

If you are the explorer type, drive North to Valley of Fire. Get off at the Moapa Indian reservation. Little store and gas station there. (fireworks) Valley of Fire has, Indian petroglyphs, petrified wood, self guided tour maps at the welcome center. When leaving continue North to Overton. The little town is an oaisis at the end of Lake Mead, has a cozy little Indian museum. It's a back roads trip from Hoover Dam, or shot up the Interstate from Las Vegas.

Go to beautiful downtown Jean Nevada. Aprox. 20 miles South of Las Vegas, and it's two casinos, nothing much else. Avoid the all you can eat crab legs, unless you have a jack hammer. grin

Continue South, from Jean to Primm Nevada, CA/NV border, three more casinos. Whiskey Pete's. Take the free tram over the interstate to Buffalo Bill's. Oyster bar is tops. Roller coaster is a real hoot. Used to be the largest verticle drop in North America. It feels like they are going to shoot you down into the desert floor, and then... whooop, up through the side of the building.

On the list of don't bother unless you want to do it just once. Avoid driving the Strip in the afternoon or night. Bumper to bumper. You can get on the Interstate and head North, it drops you off right behind the Horseshoe a block off Freemont street.

It's been awhile but Binion's had free parking validation, if you wanted to use the parking structure. Otherwise, valet is cheap and easy, everywhere. (I'm too cheap, so I park and walk)

Then there's the whole pack of casino's down a few miles taking Tropicanna, East of town. Sam's Town Etc. Kind of on the way to Hoover Dam, or on the way back?

Bullfrog City AZ / Laughlin is a day trip. If you look at the map, you can take a state highway coming back and go to Primm and Jean at night. Watch out for dogs sleeping in the middle of the road.

Bonnie Springs is a tourist trap, but it has some entertaining features. If you go there, don't miss the bank robbery, gunfight and hanging. Funny show, designed for kids, but has enough humor for adults. Wooden boardwalks, mining history, good ice cream shop (food was very good), wax museum, operating rock stamping mill, real wild west saloon with more than beer.

Get Good Maps! Make sure you have a full tank of gas. It's a long way between things out in the mountains. vbg
