I'm not Ed, but I did the tar thing, too. For the solar eclipse I took two of my dad's welding goggle smoked lenses, put them together and viewed through that. Worked great.

When no friends were available, an overturned bicycle became a ship's helm. Imagination was a very cheap toy.
