Chip ID's - UV or not UV?

Before anyone gets the wrong idea, I think Greg Susong has done a great job on the Chipguide.com. I'd be lost without it. How he finds the time, I'll never know.

My topic for discussion is the assigning of catalog numbers to chips with different UV imprinting. Frequently I have found chips with no UV's when the Chipguide list, at least, two variations. I've been told that this is caused by the fact that the UV wares off the chips during normal play or when they are cleaned (by the house or collector). I have also been told this may be a chip that missed the imprinting, although this does not warrant a separate catalog number because it can't be known if this was caused by ware or error.

I don't believe a separate catalog number should be given to an invisible mark that can be removed in normal use. Anyone agree or do I just have too much time on my hands?

Now don't even get me started on separate catalog numbers for autographed chips.
