My Cannon scanner (which I like very much) has this background gray color "problem" that I would prefer was white.

I've tried putting white cardboard and brilliant white paper on top of the items being scanned to no avail. I can crop individual images, such as chips, to eliminate the gray background ... but would like to scan against a white background to begin with.

Any helpful tips?
