Re: What is she going to use it for?

As was said earlier, MS-Office is a must. She should be able to pick up a media-only, academic version at her college's bookstore for relatively cheap ($99) or at Wal-Mart for around $140.

A 256 Mb thumb drive can be bought for around $20 to $30 and will hold all the files she needs for class and then some. The only downside is if it gets lost, all your eggs are in one basket so to speak.

Any new Dell laptop should have Wi-Fi built in to it so she won't need any thing on that end for network connectivity. As you mentioned, she will need a wireless router at home to connect to the Internet if she want's to connect wirelessly (is that a word?).

One last thing, you may want to consider buying her is a case or back pack especially made for carrying lap tops. Swiss Army or Targus are good brands; they have a special pocket in the middle of the case that the laptop slips into and keeps it suspended off of the bottom of the case so if the case gets dropped or set down hard, the computer doesn't hit the floor.

One last thing, buy your accessories on the Interet. Places like Best Buy or Office Max make a killing on those types of accessories and you can find them online for 1/2 what you would pay.

Cheers
Bill
