McCLAIN SEEKS TO AMEND IGA NCR

Story from the L.V. Review Journal:

Essentially, McClain's amendment would eliminate the ability of Tribes to buy and build on lands away from their own reservations. What the Senator ignores is that the land some tribes seek to buy once belonged to them...when they were forced to leave their tribal lands and live in what in some cases were small isolated tracts of unlivable land. New York is involved in this problem as several out of state tribes seek to buy lands within what was once their tribal territories and establish casinos. Serious issue and had the two part lnaguage that McClain's amendment would eliminate not been in effect in 1988 there are a number of tribal casinos that would not now exist--including, I believe, Foxwoods, though I may be mistaken about that. Turning Stone, however, sits on former tribal lands purchased by the Oneida's. The Senecas have built on former land but what was not then their tribal land.

For "truth in lending" I am descended from Texas Apaches so I am partial to Indian tribal ventures but understand local opposition. I just think the matter should continue to be left up to the states.
