NO DICE ...

NO DICE is the headline on this item that appears in the current issue of "The Numismatist", official monthly publication of the American Numismatic Association.

Feds nix images of gambling on Nevada quarter.

"This month, the U.S. Mint will begin striking nearly a half billion Nevada state quarters, which will not feature anything to do with the state’s gaming industry. U.S. Secretary of Treasury John Snow refused to allow consideration of any gambling designs or a rendering of the famed Las Vegas Strip. Nevada Governor Kenny Guinn and other state officials expressed disappointment with Snow’s decision, but acknowledged that no other quarter motifs show commercial enterprises.

The composition of the quarter was debated as well. The Mint refused to allow Nevada’s issue to include actual silver from the state’s mines. Plans to strike some of the coins at the old U.S. Mint in Carson City also were nixed. Nevada’s quarter, the 36th in the U.S. Mint’s 50 State Quarters program, will feature wild mustangs galloping in front of snow-capped mountains."

“What mustangs do in Nevada will stay on the state’s quarter”
