VIVA LA CONCHA - LVRJ: Norm

How's this for a visitor center?

Local preservationists are shelling out to save the La Concha Motel from La Wrecking Ball.

A Spago-catered cocktail reception is planned from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Ermenegildo Zegna in the Forum Shops at Caesars.

They hope to raise $600,000 to move the historic shell-shaped lobby to the Neon Museum, where it would become the visitors and information center.

The motel site is the future home of the Majestic, a high-rise project that will be operated by Conrad, the five-star division of Hilton Hotels Corp.

The motel's owners, the Doumani family, agreed to donate the facade. Backers need to raise the funds by the end of the year.

One of the last vintage Las Vegas motels along the Strip, The La Concha was designed in 1961 by prominent architect Paul Revere Williams. His 3,000 projects included the Los Angeles Airport, The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, The Beverly Hills hotel, and homes for such Hollywood stars as Zsa Zsa Gabor, Frank Sinatra, Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball, Anthony Quinn, Lon Chaney, and Bert Lahr.

Guest hosting will be Mayor Oscar Goodman and former U.S. Sen. Richard Bryan.
