I think you have a great idea, however, I think the observation is correct, the costs could become prohibitive.

A suggestion, have members mail an item to one location, they be placed into a box. The person responsible for handling the items would not be allowed to bid and would sworn to secrecy. The only info anybody would have would be the names of the contributors.

Just a humble suggestion.
