From time to time my wife's business puts us in Los Angeles. I often fly to Vegas, met up with her and we rent a van to go to LA. Whenever we rent, we do so at the Dollar Rent-A-Car at the Luxor. As is our (my) custom now, we have breakfast at the Pyramid Cafe, during which I'll buy a rack or two of $1 chips (from the poker room) and look for new and much older chips.
On my most recent trip, I went through 200 chips (2 racks). I was able to pull out 24 new condition chips (but still used) and 8 older chips. You can recognize the older chips because they have the UV security codes. Yes, I do get strange looks at the table from other patrons while I examine each chip with a hand-held black light.
Of the 8 UV tagged chips, one was an error version with LUXOR on one side and CIRCUS CIRCUS on the other. The other seven were a mix of TUT, LUXOR, PYRAMID and CIRCUS CIRCUS.
So, if my math is not wrong, this random sampling of two hundred chips produced 8 UV tagged (older) chips still in-use at the Luxor. This indicates that roughly 4% of the 'float' (and perhaps the entire rack) of $1 chips are UV tagged chips.
