Re: Cleaning Silver Strikes - My Method

Have you examined the surfaces with a glass after your cleaning, Fred? I'll bet you'll find lots of "hairline scratches". Proof coins and medals (like silverstrikes) should NEVER be cleaned with an abrasive if you're concerned about the surface finish. True they will look bright and clean to the naked eye, but serious collectors won't want them for their collection.

I suggest if you have tarnish or toning that you use a coin dip. This will remove the surface toning but won't leave hairlines. Actually, with the plastic cases silverstrikes come in, you shouldn't have any oxides or sulphur compounds forming anyway. Only if the case is cracked, or someone removes the token can the air start to work on the surfaces.
