Sorry, not much substance...

...I should have read it before I posted. Here's the only parts that interested me...

"Chula Vista’s Village Club card room..."

"Ana Carr, the (Gambling Control) commission’s spokesperson, says there are 94 legal card rooms in California. Every level of those establishments, from food servers to dealers, is strictly licensed by the state. Local municipalities like Chula Vista add their own set of regulations—and taxes (other area gaming rooms, the Palomar Club and the Lucky Lady on El Cajon Boulevard, and Ocean’s Eleven in Oceanside, are sanctioned by local ordinances)."

"THE INSIDE OF THE CLUB is a replica of so many others, in casinos all across the country—a place where time is ignored and sterile comfort holds sway. Twelve standard card tables are full with patrons."

"In the back of the haphazard complex, the Pai Gow room...."

"Harvey Souza, the club’s owner, shuffles around tables, talking with patrons he’s known for a lifetime.... His father, Alfred, opened the Village Club in 1946 with three tables and a separate saloon. The place had sawdust on the floor in those years and wasn’t open to the fairer sex.

Harvey started dealing hands the day he turned 21, then took over the business when his father died in 1969."

"Village Club... is described by the city’s Special Investigations Unit as a mom-and-pop business that’s one of the more established and respected in town."
