The manufacturers (USPC and Burt) identify a crest & seal (or a seal and crest) as any chip with an inlay. Using that definition your chip would be considered a crest and seal. Also, using that definition a hat & cane or small key mold would be considered a crest and seal, as long as it had an inlay.

Such a definition is way too broad to be of use for chip collectors.

The chip that you have would be considered a die-cut. Die cut collectors (Steve Passalacqua is the king of die cuts) collect such chips if the inlay is a monogram, not the generic type you have.

My definition of a crest and seal contain the following:

1) it is a clay chip, not the plastic (plastic/clay) used today.

2) chip has a round inlay (there are exceptions) However, no matter the shape, there must be a litho or printing on the inlay

3) the litho inlay must have a clear celluloid or plastic film protecting the inlay. Modern (1970s and later) chips like the Sahara-Tahoe plain mold roulette lack the clear protective film. The S-T would be consider a plain mold with inlay, not a crest & seal.

4) the surface of a crest and seal must be smooth. The center must be even with the rim. You should not be able to tell where the rim ends and the inlay begins if you run over the surface of the chip with your fingernail.
