Why use ring-type air-tites? :-)

I use direct-fit air-tites for my Grand Opening chips.
The direct-fit leaves the edge of the chip visable.
While the two faces of the chip are the obvious focus, the edge of the chip sometimes contributes to identity or information.
I am wondering why anyone would use the ring-type air-tites that conceal the chip edges?
