Space on Collection Library.

Hi Victor,

I very happy to see you have signed up for a site at Collection Library. I hope you are finding the service easy to use.

All new accounts are initially allocated only 2 megs of disk space for a couple of different reasons. One concern that I have in hosting sites is that someone not within our club will sign up for an account and attempt to post files that are not authorized on my server. So this allows me to initially control new accounts by limiting how much web server disk space they can use for files.

Once a new user who is eligible for a site has exhasted all of their initial allocation of space I have no problem whatsoever in allocating additional space. Just shoot me off an email when you run out of space and I'd be happy to bump your account up with additional space.

I have allocated an additional 5 megs of disk to space to your account.

This also gives me a chance to review the size of the scans that are being uploaded. If the scans are created 260 by 260 in size at 200 dpi or less using medium JPG quality/compression, your scans should be about 30k in size. Given these parameters you should be able to post between 60 and 70 scans on your site.

You have posted 22 scans and they range in size from 79k to 123k.

You might try experimenting with your scanner and see if you can get your scan sizes down a little bit. This not only conserves disk space but it allows your site to be browsed more quickly by web surfers.

Here are a couple of suggestions:
> Your scans are 320 by 320 in size. For best results we recommend scans of 260 by 260. You might check to see if you can denote the output size of the files to these dimensions.
> Most scanners will allow the user to select the quality of JPG file compression to be used when scans are saved to disk. If one selects the "High" quality setting, then the files will be created with less compression and thus are larger in size than those files saved with lower quality settings. It appears your images are saved using the high quality setting. You might try to see if your scanner supports changing the compression rate of your JPG files. If so, you might want to experiment with lower quality settings to see if you can find a setting that still works for you and saves space too.

Thanks again for using the service. Please let me know if you have any other questions or problems.

Brian
