"Other hobbies are thriving from grading"
You need to take another look at the sports card hobby. They are not thriving. Too many mfgr / sets, too many inserts, expensive packs with too few cards, incorrectly graded cards, regrading of cards. Shows have dropped off, fewer dealers setup, fewer collectors attend. The list of problems goes on.
