Kenny Francis or other newbies transporting chips

Kenny asked:
Do I walk around with all my tradable chips?

Kenny, if you just have a small amount, the answer is yes. However, if you're bringing a substantial amount, like some collectors, then I'm compelled to share this story.

Wether you're going to a convention or just out to the local Denny's for an afternoon chip gathering. Always be sure to carry your investments in a secure carrier of some sort. The reason I say this is, because a friend and fellow collector purchased one of those flat style aluminum poker chip boxes off of eBay, I think he said it held 500 or 1000 chips. Nevertheless, chips are heavy so here's my point. He was transporting a large number of trading chips to a get-together and when he approached the entrance to the restaurant, one of the latches failed and the entire case opened up with 100's of chips flying everywhere. Luckily these were traders and not high-end chips from his collection. Although in any event, instead of participating in the trade session, he spent his time picking up chips from flower beds, sidewalks and the parking lot. Not to mention his loss of around a dozen or so due to damage and another dozen or so that were never found. Probably rolled down into a storm drain I would imagine. Who knows.

I'm not lucky enough to make the conventions, due to my work, although I do meet on somewhat of a regular basis with local collectors. I would not transport my collection chips in anything less than the best carrier available. I use musician quality carry cases with foam lining and super heavy latches & handles. Plus my chips are either in airtites, flips or special boxes.

For my traders I use the same quality box. However I'm a little reckless as to how I store them inside that box. I use standard lucite trays, stacked. With the handle on top so they're never tipping over. This works for short travel, but I would never attempt transporting them on an aircraft like that. If the box were to get tipped over, you'd have a mess inside, w/possible damage.

But don't get me wrong, the flat aluminum poker case are great for home games. I just wouldn't recommend long distance travel with one of those.

Just my 2 cents...

Enjoy the convention,

Note the heavy latch & handle below.

This particular box will hold 1200 - 1300 chips depending on how you store them inside.
