Re: Convention Atmosphere?
In Response To: Convention Atmosphere? ()

Hi Kenny,
As a "seasoned veteran" of two conventions I'll try to answer your questions.

"When we are not trading are there people selling chips?"

Almost the other way around. Prepared to have your senses assaulted when you first walk in. The room is full of dealers with countless chips of every type. Not only chips, but ashtrays, matches, photographs, postcards....literally anything with a casino name on it. Keep in mind that the dealers are generally ther to sell, not trade. There's plenty of trading going on, too. After the banquet on Wednesday and the Last Dance on Saturday night are the two big times, but you'll find trading opportunities the whole time you're there.

"How does a rookie know what value each chip has?"

A chip is worth whatever you're willing to spend on it. The price guides are just that, guides. You dtermine what it's worth to you. If you think someone is asking too much, make a counter-offer.

"Do I walk around with a price guide or Chip Rack? "

A lot of people do. I also mark mine with the chips I already own. In a pinch, most of the dealers have a price guide they will let you look at.

"Do I walk around with all my tradable chips?"

If you're staying at the Riviera, I'd leave them in the room and get them when needed. Carry something to put all your new acquisitions in.

"What is the dress code?"

At the banquet you'll see everything from tuxedos to jeans. The rest of the time is strictly casual. You, and everyone, should have an official club shirt, though. Stop by the promotions table first thing Thursday and I'll sell you one.

Another thing...the convention is not just the bourse floor. Be sure to take advantage of the educational seminars, the auction, and meet as many fellow chippers as you can. On the floor itself, in addition to the dealers you'll find members' exhibits, the club promotions table, the building fund table and a preview of the auction. If there's a tour of the neon sign boneyard again this year, it's a must-do for Las Vegas buffs.

All in all, just come prepared to have fun. Hope this helps. BTW, thanks for the Borland trade. Chips arrived last week and I never emailed you back.
