Howard Hughes' "Las Vegas Story" ncr

Switched computers a while back and had to move and rearrange my nest and ditch some files and such. Getting caught up some and decided to scan some more movie paper to file and post some of it.

A killer Las Vegas movie is Las Vegas Story. It's rated as a Golden Turkey but for anyone interested in LV history, it is a Must See. Made in 1952 it has Jane Russell and rat/hubby Vincent Price arriving in downtown Vegas by train. Jane's old boyfriend V. Mature is the town sheriff these days and melodrama ensues. Tons of scenes of '52 downtown Las Vegas make this especially valuable for us. I've only seen this flick once and didn't tape the darn thing. I've been waiting for it to show up again on the oldies channels but nothing yet. I ought to seach out a couple of copies and send one to the Club library, it's that interesting.

You'll notice the sparkler that Russell is wearing above and in the corner of the lobby card. I lost out on eBay to a publicity photo of a Tiffany's rep presenting the necklace to the star poolside at The Flamingo. Since Price and Russell stayed at "The Fabulous" out on the strip in the movie, I would imagine that those scenes were probably actually The Flamingo. Downtown casino scenes may have been the Pioneer Club.

Interesting that this movie puts Howard Hughes in Las Vegas in 1952. Our friend Robt. Maheu went to work for Hughes in '55 and didn't get to Las Vegas til 1959. Maheu's first trip involved Greg Bautzer (think Wilkerson, Bugsey and H. Hughes), Beldon Kettleman (El Rancho), and Johnny Roselli (gangster). But... that's another movie. grin
