and could probably have told when he saw them anyway, or could he? if he didnt know they were 'altered'

The red one is easy to see under the glass, the cross hatching does not line up.
The green one, however, appears to have been 're-pressed' IMO 99% of people would believe it was genuine. Probably 80% of people would think the red one was.
