C.W. Rice Co. (Yes, again)

I've posted a few times looking for info. on the C.W. Rice Co. and the L's chip mold. Steve Passalacqua was kind enough to send me a few photos of some interesting stuff. Steve, you are a very nice bunny!

My appologies for the huge photos.

The first photo is of an old chip box. The return address on the box is OAKLAND 18, CALIF. This is significant as it somewhat dates the box. From the research I've done this type of address system (a city and a number) began in 1943 and ended, with the introduction of the ZIP Code, in 1963. I believe this box places the C.W. Rice Co. in Oakland, CA during that 20 period.

The second photo is of a C.W. Rice Co. advertising chip. Note the chip is a HHL (horse head left) mold.

If anyone can answer a few questions I'd very much appreciate it. #1 - Was the HHL mold an "open" mold? #2 - Is it unusual for a chip to have one insert? I can recall only ever seeing a handful of single insert chips.

I'm still looking for info. on the C.W. Rice Co for an article for the CC&TN. Any and all help is appreciated.
