Re: Book on Vegas History
In Response To: Book on Vegas History ()

Boy, I wish there was such a book! If you find this animal, please let us know, perhaps something will come outta this centennial year. Dwayne Kling has put out some great stuff about Reno but I am unaware of an equal effort by anyone for Las Vegas (trivia: Las Vegas is an Indian phrase that translates to "busted escalator"). Best source at the moment I'm afraid are internet sites, another one is http://www.earlyvegas.com

Search at Amazon or your favorite bookseller for a book about 100 People of either LV or NV. that one of the state newspapers put out. For purple prose/yellow journalism about the mob in LV try The Green Felt Jungle by Reid and Demaris copyright 1963. Interesting reads also, The Man Who Invented Las Vegas about Billy Wilkerson by his son, W.R. Wilkerson III and Next To Hughes by Maheu. See how often the name Greg Bautzer pops up in those two books! Currently reading Mario Puzo's Inside Las Vegas...a real snooze fest but GREAT pics.
