Re: JoplinMissouri Illegal chips
In Response To: JoplinMissouri Illegal chips ()

I have a rather large collection of illegals. Some from Joplin.
I do not reconize the Club names in your post. I have several different Southern Club's but again none are from Joplin.

Many of the old operaters used initial chips. Below is one from Joplin. It was sent to Bert Crum. A 2nd name on the record is BH Showalter hence the BHS. This record is unusual as there is no date of delivery nor address. It would have been late 1930's to 40's. No address could have meant the manufacturer was keeping it a secret as they did for some "connected guys" or the chips were picked up at the Kansas City store of the Mason Co.

If you can find Crum or Showalter in old criss cross directories or newspaper accounts you can more than likely put a name to the club they operated. Its a sure bet they were arrested more than once for gambling.
There were a number of clubs in Joplin. hopefully in a couple years I can get back to doing some research on them. If you have any names in mind for operating the clubs, Allan could search TGT database and connect them to clubs.
