A friend of mine recently bid on an item on and he was outbid for that item. But he found another auction of the same item that was available for Buy it now and it did just that, However during that time on the other auction the highest bidder retracted their bid making my friend the highest bidder of that auction again.

Now my question is, Will my friend be obligated to purchase that item because the previous highest bidder backed out before the auction ended or is he not obligated to purchase that item. The seller seems to be giving him a hard time about it.
