Re: NCR My New Pride & Joy - Riverside Lighter

Very nice Charles! Loved the quote too. Mert and his brothers (I believe there was a third one) also did some business in Hollywood. I was Googling a Clover Club chip I acquired several months ago and Mert's name popped up. I looked over near the lamp on my desk and there sat this matchbook. Seems the Wertheimer's opened up a gaming club on Sunset Blvd in the mid thirties, the Clover Club. Lots of high-end Tinsel Town Titans made the scene there. Never did get a detailed sequence of events but Bugsey Seigel had an ownership interest as time went on. Bugsey got raided once, that's got to be an interesting story. After Bugsey and the Wertheimers were out of the building, Billy Wilkerson ran the Trocadero at that location. Interesting how all these figures spun through each other's orbits and landed in Nevada. Sounds like Mert had the most prosaiac fate of the bunch, Reno's gangland pioneers don't get much attention, by their own design. grin
