Re: Matchbooks...Phonebooks...Harvey Fuller

Harvey Fuller's list of licenses says:
Western Casino 124 Fremont St. 7-19-41 to 1-3-42
New Western Casino 124 Fremont St. 2-2-42 to ?
Horseshoe Club, Binions 128 E. Fremont St. 8-51 to 1-8-58
Horseshoe Club, Joe W. Brown's 128 E. Fremont St. 1-9-58 to 4-22-60, when Benny got out of prison and returned to the Horseshoe.
The Westerner (Benny Binion) 23 Fremont St. 5-6-50 to 1-7-51 (Benny opened the Horseshoe 8-51.)
The Westerner (Emelio Giorgetti) 23 Fremont St. 1-28-51 to 7-21-54
The Westerner (Hart, et. al.) 23 Fremont St. 7-22-54 to 6-1-60

We have seen many discrepancies between Fuller and the phone books. The phone book sometimes kept the ad for a year or two after closing. Another problem was that Harvey Fuller's scribbles on the back of Keno cards was very difficult for Howdy Herz to decipher. grin Then again, the city kept changing the street numbers and the same location was listed at a different number in phone books over the years. I suspect that the city planners knew that someone would write books on the casino locations in later years and tried to make it more challenging. vbg
