Ed, I tried to reply to your post about CA chips yesterday, but had a few computer problems. I have some info on the Square Deal Jim / 186 – Eddy chips. This is from an ebay listing for a set (3) of the chips. The seller was John Johannes. You may want to contact him directly as he has lots of info on CA chips.

“RARE SET OF 3 ILLEGAL CHIPS - SQUARE DEAL JIM - 186 EDDY STREET - SAN FRANCISCO, CA - CIRCA 1936 .
Patrons from nearby hotels often played in this illegal card room . The Adrian Hotel was at 493 Eddy , the Belmont Hotel was at 730 Eddy , the Empress Hotel was at 144 Eddy (practically next door) , the Fairfax Hotel was at 420 Eddy , the Imperial Hotel was at 951 Eddy ,the Langham Hotel was close at 141 Eddy , the Ormond Hotel was at 440 Eddy , the Rand Hotel was at 364 Eddy , the Ritz Hotel was close at 216 Eddy .
The owner / operator of this illegal S.F. card room was rumored to be an unsavory character who went by the name of James " Square Deal Jim " Sullivan . He was arrested by local authorities on many occasions, but seems to have never been convicted of any crimes.”

You also listed the “49 Camp” chip as attributed to San Francisco. I believe these chips are from Oakland.

Finally, you list “Hi-Hat” chips as from SF. May I ask you to post your info? I have these in my “possible” SF file, but have never seen an attribution I could live with.

Thanks!
