Defamation of character

Okay legal eagles...help me out here.

I thought that in order to win a lawsuit for defamation of character, the plaintiff has to prove by a preponderance of the evidence that he/she has suffered a monitary loss due to defamatory statements made by the defendant.

Is that right? Or is there more to it?

At least that's what my legal team (judges Judy and Joe Brown) tells me.... grin
